Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the basic features and the format of academic paragraphs. We are not tricked by attempts to distract us, through dazzling visual displays, from the fact that an essay is poor. Use student answers to write a list on the board of the ways that George Lucas changed moviemaking.
Step 4: Revise and edit the draft.
Have students complete the exercise and then write the sentences on the board. At the end of the course, have students review their assignments and select the ones they want to revise for inclusion in the portfolio.
Explain that students did peer review when they completed the Try It Out! Alternatively, copy the answers, write them on the board, or post them to a class website.
The argument should develop through the language you use and therefore in a short essay sub-headings are unnecessary. Have students complete the tasks and then compare answers with a partner. Read the model aloud, and have students read along silently.
